The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently found that more than 25 percent of American adults have untreated tooth decay, and 91 percent have at least one tooth that has been treated for tooth decay in the past. These results are an improvement from the 1960s, when there were many more reports of tooth decay and tooth loss as a result, but there is still room for improvement.

Tooth decay is preventable if preventative steps are taken. Here are four ideas to help you ward off tooth decay before it has a chance to start.

Beware of dry mouth

If you are experiencing dry mouth, it could be a sign that something is wrong. The production of saliva helps protect against tooth decay, so when that production is lacking, you are more likely to develop cavities and tooth decay as the enamel wears off.

Utilize the benefits of fluoride

Fluoride is often referred to as “nature’s cavity fighter.” Dentists recommend brushing with fluoride toothpaste and drinking plenty of fluoride water (most public water supplies contain fluoride). Dentists can also apply fluoride directly to your teeth during a dental visit if you are prone to cavities.

Eat fruits and veggies

Fruits and vegetables should make up at least half of what you eat each day. Properties contained in these fruits and veggies have cavity-fighting abilities and whiten your teeth in the process.

Visit your dentist regularly

Visiting your dentist regularly gives opportunity to find and identify potential gum diseases, cavities, and gingivitis. When you visit the dentist regularly, he gets the chance to thoroughly examine your teeth. This helps the dentist to be aware of abnormalities.

Implementing these four suggestions will help you to prevent tooth decay and tooth loss before the problem becomes too big to handle.
