We’re certain that once your braces are on, you’ll go above and beyond to make sure that you take good care of them and that they stay in good shape. But as the old saying goes, life happens, and when it does, it can result in damage to your braces. When that happens, the most important thing to remember is: don’t panic! The next important thing to remember is that you need to contact our dentists, Drs. Calder and Durr to schedule an appointment. The dentist may want to see you right away, or you may be able to wait until your next appointment.

If for some reason you lose a band, hang on to it and don’t try to reattach it yourself. Instead, bring it with you to your next appointment. It is is simply loose, leave it alone and do your best to not let it bother you. The dentist will either re-cement it, or replace it.

If you have wire that breaks or is poking into your cheek, it can be annoying and can irritate your mouth. Try using a pencil eraser to gently move it back into place. If it is still irritating you, cover it with dental wax to relieve your discomfort. You can also try a topical pain reliever. You may want to trim the wire. Before you do, call our office. There is a danger that you might swallow or even inhale the piece of wire, and we will advise you on your next steps.

If you should lose a spacer, that is often a sign that you are ready to have a band placed. In this case, call the office and schedule an appointment.

In the case of a loose bracket, try covering it with dental wax to keep it from irritating you.
